TUCKER PETERTIL MUSIC WITHOUT BORDERS

Juno goes contemplative between exploding guitar riffs

Juno

“A Future Lived in Past Tense” (De Soto Records, P.O. Box 60932, Washington, DC 20039. Web site: www.desotorecords.com)

Juno’s second CD is split between uplifting punk explosions and guitar ruminations that hark back to the day when UK bands such as Ride, Verve, Swervedriver and the Pale Saints were in the midst of shoe-gazing reverie.

This Seattle-based quartet features an awesome three-guitar onslaught leavened by some truly beautiful songs that float out of the speakers on wings of pure light. Lead singer and guitarist Arlie Carstens broke his neck snowboarding two years ago, and that might account for the more reflective moments on the CD.

While the band is currently short a bass player, Nate Mendel from Foo Fighters and Sunny Day Real Estate and Nick Harmer from Death Cab For Cutie filled in on four-string duties for the record.

Equally comfortable with intense jammed-up rant rock and engrossing pastoral passages, Juno’s 70-minute CD swings between the pendulum points of Pink Floyd and Hüsker Dü with such ease that you can easily see that “A Future Lived in Past Tense” chronicles a band coming into its own strengths.
