| Show Review -- Rainer Maria, Juno, The Paper Hearts At Clunk
Article Date: Wednesday, July 18, 2001 Show Date: Sunday, July 15, 2001 at Clunk Music Hall By Roger Barrett The Morning News/NWAonline.net Rainer Maria are always fun to see, they have been on a nine month tour (with very few breaks!) but were in top form Sunday night. Juno are indie rock veterans making their Arkansas debut and The Paper Hearts are a new, local country-ish band filling in for Figure Five. This show was fun and made me smile. The Paper Hearts are Fayetteville's version of Lucero -- they write country songs about girls. Songs that are fun to hear and that remind me of early Toad the Wet Sprocket. The band played 6 songs that ranged from slow and brooding to mid tempo boot stompers. Hopefully this band sticks around awhile. Check out their next show in August at Clunk! Up next were Seattle's Juno. Juno were surprisingly rocking. I don't think anyone knew what to expect, but I'm sure a lot of people left thinking Juno stole the show. The band's 40 minute set included most of their new record "A Future Lived in Past Tense" on DeSoto Records. Their set was extremely energetic, and very tight. They are a cross between Braid and Fugazi, but are very hard to describe. They have been around since 1996 and it shows in their layered guitar-based songs. Check out Juno so you can sing along at their next show. They also have a split CD with the Dismemberment Plan, and 7 inches on Sub Pop and Jade Tree Records. Last, but not least, were Madison's Rainer Maria. Rainer Maria are no strangers to Clunk. They play here about every 5 or 6 months, and rock each and every face at their shows. The band is still on tour in support of their "A Better Version of Me" record on Polyvinyl Records. Their 70 minute set included songs from all three full length records and "Atlantic" from their CDEP. Their set also included crowd favorites like "Breakfast Of Champions," "Tinfoil," "Planetary," "Broken Radio," "Artificial Light," "Thought I Was" and "Rise." Rainer Maria played with lots of enthusiasm. Their songs are catchy and emotional. They are road veterans and their shows are consistently entertaining. I recommend picking up their records at Clunk Music Hall and coming to their next show. I'm sure it will be in the next few months. Roger Barrett is a music fan who lives and works in Fayetteville.
